Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG officially revealed!

Mercedes-Benz had just revealed their most powerful compact hard-top convertible, the SLK55 AMG! Not officially shown to the public yet, but Mercedes-Benz had already released official photos and details of this brutal convertible ahead of it’s public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show this mid-September.

Let’s start with what our eyes can see. A full AMG bodykit had been installed to the car, with a more aggressive front bumper design with integrated LED day-time-running lights and side air-intakes. There is a subtle side skirt on the sides. And for the rear, we get a slightly wider bumper, a small boot lid spoiler, rear diffuser, and quad oval exhaust pipes instead of the trapezoidal shaped pipes from other AMG models. I prefer this one.

Ok I almost missed those black painted alloys but that’s all about it. Now into the heart of the car. We should expect a twin turbocharged engine but Mercedes-Benz had decided this time to use a new naturally aspirated hand-built AMG 5.5-liter V8 petrol engine with 422hp. That’s not only 62hp more than the previous model, but it is also more fuel efficient.

One of it’s fuel saving trick is Mercedes-Benz’s new AMG Cylinder Management System which can shut down up to four cylinders when driving under low rpm which is between 800 to 3,600 rpm. A standard stop/start function as well as a more slippery body helps with fuel saving too.

The naturally aspirated 5.5 liter unit from the SLK 55 AMG is actually based on the 5.5 biturbo engine used in the E63 AMG and the S63 AMG but with no turbocharging. Despite less power without the turbochargers, it can still accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155mph).

That’s pretty quick for a compact convertible. However, if power is never enough for you, hopefully there will be a more brutal Black Series coming in the future. The previous model had a Black Series, so there is a good chance this will have too. Not quite sure what difference a Black Series AMG car would make?
