Super Topless Series. McLaren 720S Spider officially launched in Malaysia!

The all-new McLaren 720S Spider recently made its debut on Malaysian soil! Coated in this stunning shade called Memphis Red, the Spider is available to order with a starting price of RM 1,218,000.00 before duties and options.

Similar to the Coupé, the Spider is available in the same three specifications which are performance and luxury trims, extending above the standard model. New to the Spider however, are two new colour choices – Belize blue and Aztec gold – followed by the return of Supernova Silver, a heritage colour by McLaren.

720S Coupé

The Spider’s core structure is carbon fibre just like every current McLaren models. The strength, rigidity, and light weight of the McLaren Monocage is the base for the dynamic excellence for which McLarens are renowned for.

The Spider features the latest Monocage II-S which is basically the same as the Coupé’s Monocage II but without the central spine running front to rear above the cabin. Furthermore, the rearmost section of the upper structure is also unique to the Spider.

The header rail across the top of the windscreen has been revised in order to integrate the central latching mechanism for the dihedral doors, which in turn creates space for the retractable hard-top roof.

In order to enhance the rollover protection and rigidity of the chassis, fixed carbon fibre structural supports are integrated into the rear of the of the Monocage II-S, additionally providing the main anchor points for the roof system and the seatbelts.

Overall, the 720S Spider is only 49kg heavier than the 720S Coupé, and at 1332kg it is comfortably the lightest car in the segment. Meaning it’s 88kg less than the 1,420kg dry weight of its closest rival from Italy.

The canopy-like design of the 720S Coupé is recognized for the sense of “360-degree vision” it provides, allowing generous natural light to flood into the cabin and setting a new benchmark for supercar visibility, with the Senna bringing it further to another level. The glass roof uses electrochromic technology (made popular by Maybach) that darkens the glass with a touch of a button.

The active rear spoiler, which automatically activates to either decrease drag or increase downforce can also acts as an airbrake to enhance vehicle balance under heavy braking. McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control II hydraulic suspension which is already renowned for being sharp while delivering daily usability also allows you to choose between three handling modes – Comfort, Sport, or Track.

McLaren’s staple 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers the 720S Spider is unchanged from the Coupé. This engine produces 720PS and 770Nm of torque and it goes from 0-100km/h in just 2.9 seconds!

The acceleration continues for up to 200km/h in just 7.9 seconds – just 0.1 seconds off the pace of the Coupé – the 720S Spider will continue accelerating to a Coupé-matching top speed of 341km/h (212mph) with the roof raised. Even with the roof lowered, maximum speed remains extraordinary at 325km/h (202mph).

There’s no denying the impressive performance figures, but the million dollar question is: Coupé or Spider?
