Big in Size. MINI on Fuel. MINI Countryman Hybrid & Sports launched in Malaysia!

MINI’s finally going electric! Just a couple weeks ago MINI officially launched their first ever Plug-In Hybrid variant in Malaysia: The Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 (PHEV). The Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 is powered by a 1.5 three-cylinder turbocharged engine with an output of 134hp and 220 Nm of torque from the engine and paired with a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

That combined with an electronic motor that is mounted underneath the rear seat, the car delivers a combined 224hp and 385Nm of torque which makes it the model that produces the most torque in the MINI range. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 6.8 sec and a top speed of 198km/h

As for the price, the Cooper S E Countryman All 4 costs RM255,888 on-the-road without insurance which is 14k less compared to the normal Cooper S Countryman which goes for RM269,888 without insurance as well.

As with BMW’s plug-in hybrids, three drive modes are available for the driver to select: Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Save Battery. With Auto eDrive mode it will run fully electric as often as possible and can drive up to 80km/h as long as the battery charge status is between 100% and 7%, while in Max eDrive mode drivers can enjoy purely electric driving of up to 120km/h.

In Save Battery mode it will use the petrol engine to recharge the battery and keep it at 90% charge (You will have to plug in to a charger to charge it to 100%), and the driver could switch back to electric mode whenever he or she wants. On a full charge, the Countryman plug-in hybrid is capable of an electric-only range of up to 40km.

On the inside, it has a well-designed interior with premium materials as one would expect from a BMW-owned company, and there is plenty of space in the front and rear seats for full-sized adults. Standard features includes Walknappa Leather steering wheel, a high resolution 6.5” Touch Screen display and ALL4 exterior body kit. The car also features MINI’s unique eALL4 AWD system where the engine powers the front wheels while the electric motor powers the rear.

MINI Malaysia also introduced the MINI Cooper S Countryman Sports alongside the Countryman Plug-In Hybrid. The Sports variant is basically the petrol-powered Countryman S but with added equipment, namely the John Copper Works Aerodynamic Kit and also sports suspension, larger 8.8 Touch Screen Display with Navigation, and 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

The Sports variant is the newest MINI to be locally assembled in the country making Malaysia the first market in the world outside the Netherlands to locally assemble the new Countryman. The Sports model will cost you RM 245,888 on-the-road without insurance and comes in the colors of British Racing Green, Thunder Grey, Light White and Chili Red.

The New MINI Copper S Countryman Sports will be powered by 2 litre 4-cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Engine. Coupled with with an 8-speed Sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the car is capable of delivering 192hp and 280 Nm of torque. This translates to an acceleration of 0 to 100km/h in just 7.4 seconds at a top speed of 224km/h. Fuel consumption is a claimed average of 6.5 litres per 100 km of fuel.

What do you think? Would you go for the MINI Countryman hybrid or Sports over the equivalent BMW 3 Series?
